The victim was alone at home when the incident occurred. Her parents and elder brother were at work, and her younger brother was at school. The suspect, a carpenter by profession, was known to the family, who had shifted to Bengaluru from Koppal district nearly a year and a half ago.

According to investigators, Yellappa entered the house, sexually assaulted the minor, and inflicted fatal injuries by striking her face with a gas cylinder before fleeing the scene. The girl’s elder brother found her critically injured when he returned for lunch.

Further investigation revealed that the accused had been observing the girl for several days. He was allegedly under the influence of drugs when the crime was committed. Police also found that Yellappa had stolen a motorcycle from an unknown person in Tavarekere the previous evening, which he used to reach the victim’s residence.

Following the attack, he reportedly carried the gas cylinder away and sold it in a neighboring village. Surveillance camera footage helped authorities track his movements, leading to his arrest on Wednesday night.

A case has been registered at Tavarekere police station, and a detailed investigation is currently underway.
