BBMP carried a 3 week survey

Eastern parts of Bengaluru were found to have greater manifestation of street dogs

District wise data to be released shortly

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) carried out a survey of dogs between July 11th and August 2nd. The survey was carried out on bikes by the BBMP officials. 50 members were part of the project. Each of the 50 divisions that have been demarcated in the city for the purposes of veterinary care were allocated an official for the survey. The district wise figure would be released publicly shortly. The old areas of Bengaluru were found to have a greater manifestation of street dogs. The west and south zones of the city were also found to have a sizable concentration of street dogs.

“We’ve compiled the data collected by dog census teams and found about 2.2 lakh strays on Bengaluru streets. The number of dogs has decreased compared to the earlier dog census held in 2019. Effective implementation of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme and the food problem stray dogs faced during the Covid-19 lockdowns are the main reasons for the decline in numbers,” a BBMP official stated as per a report in the Times of India

The 2019 census of dogs had revealed that 3.1 lakh dogs resided in the city.
