An international report (Sustainable Futures Collaborative) says major Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi are currently focusing on short-term responses to heatwaves. It has highlighted that nine major Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai and Delhi are currently focusing on short-term responses to heatwaves. However, the report warns that long-term strategies are still lacking, which could lead to an increase in heat-related deaths.

The study, which used climate models identified these cities, each with populations exceeding 1 million as particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures and humidity, which will result in higher heat index values.
Mumbai, with a population of 12.4 million is already suffering from extended heatwaves exacerbated by high humidity, which impairs the body’s ability to cope with extreme temperatures. While short-term measures have been implemented, such as temporary cooling actions, the study points out the absence of long-term solutions. These include sustainable cooling systems, work-loss insurance, and improved fire and electricity services.
In cities like Mumbai, Bengaluru and Surat, civil society organizations have been actively advocating for stronger climate action. This suggests a crucial role for such groups in pushing the government to adopt more comprehensive measures. Without stronger long-term strategies and enhanced government collaboration with civil society, the risks posed by heatwaves to vulnerable populations are likely to worsen.
The report emphasizes the urgent need for a more holistic approach to mitigate the growing heat crisis in India’s major cities.
