Bengaluru auto fare hike: Minimum ride now Rs 36 from August 1

Starting August 1, Bengaluru auto rickshaw commuters will have to pay more, as the minimum fare for the first 2 km will rise from Rs 30 to Rs 36. The state government's decision has sparked mixed reactions from both commuters and auto drivers.

While some commuters have expressed frustration, claiming that auto drivers already overcharge despite fixed meter rates, others fear that this hike will only worsen the issue. “Even at Rs 30, many drivers demand extra. Now with Rs 36, the chances of fare disputes will only grow,” said a city commuter.

On the other hand, auto drivers have shared divided opinions. A section of drivers welcomes the revision, citing rising fuel costs, gas prices, and expensive spare parts. “We’re struggling to maintain our vehicles. The fare hike helps cover basic expenses,” said one driver. However, others fear the fare increase may drive away customers. “At Rs 30, people are already hesitant to take autos. With Rs 36, they might shift to other transport,” one driver said.

There’s also a financial burden on drivers due to meter recalibration, which is expected to cost around Rs 1,000. The process involves removing old meters and installing upgraded ones aligned with the new fare structure.

Key changes in auto fares:

1. Minimum fare:
   • Old: Rs 30 for first 2 km
   • New: Rs 36 for first 2 km
2. Fare after 2 km:
   • Old: Rs 15 per km
   • New: Rs 18 per km
3. Waiting charges:
   • First 5 minutes free
   • After that: Old- Rs 5, New- Rs 10
4. Luggage fare:
   • Up to 20 kg -Free
   • 20–50 kg: Old – Rs 5, New- Rs 10
5. Night fare (10 PM to 5 AM):
   • Old: Rs 45 for first 2 km
   • New: Rs 54 for first 2 km (Rs 36 + Rs 18 night surcharge)
