The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced a complete ban on animal slaughter and meat sales within its jurisdiction on February 26, 2025, in observance of Maha Shivaratri. As per the directive, all slaughterhouses and meat shops across Bengaluru will remain shut for the day.

The civic body confirmed the decision in a post on X, stating, “On the occasion of the Maha Shivaratri Festival, on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, slaughter of animals in slaughterhouses as well as the sale of meat in outlets under the jurisdiction of the BBMP is strictly prohibited.”

BBMP regularly implements such restrictions on religious occasions, including Gandhi Jayanti and other major Hindu festivals. Earlier this year, ahead of Aero India 2025, it had also enforced a ban on meat sales within a 13-kilometre radius of Yelahanka Air Force Station from January 23 to February 17 to ensure cleanliness and safety during the prestigious event. Additionally, on January 30, a similar restriction was imposed for Sarvodaya Day (Martyrs' Day).

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to attend Maha Shivaratri celebrations at Isha Yoga Centre in Coimbatore. According to an official release, Isha founder Sadhguru will unveil a free meditation app during the event. The celebrations will take place in the presence of the iconic Adiyogi statue, attracting several dignitaries.
