  • Ban would be in effect on September 6th
  • Slaughterhouses to remain shut as well
  • Action to be initiated against those flouting rules

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has issued a notice banning the sale of meat on September 6th. It also indicated that the slaughter of animals would be prohibited on the day. Slaughterhouses and abattoirs would remain closed on that day. Those attempting to flout the rules would face action. A BBMP official confirmed the same in an interaction with The Hindu.

This ban is also issued during Ganesh Chaturthi, Sri Rama  Navami, Krishna Janmashtami and Gandhi Jayanthi.

This move received a mixed response from the citizens of Bengaluru. Some wondered if this ban is also extended to the online sale of meat and if such bans would provide an undue advantage to some competitors in the meat industry.

Others stressed on banning the “ban culture”. The ban was looked at as imposition by those presenting this argument. It was presented as interference in the dietary habits of individuals.

A similar controversy had taken shape when speculations of a ban on the sale of meat during Navratri had made rounds in Delhi last year. The justification given for this order was that the sentiments and feelings of the general public had to be kept in view.
