  • BBMP clarifies that there has been no increase in parking tax
  • New parking tax structure ensures a standard rate for all
  • Parking tax for residential buildings will be charged at ₹2 per sq ft

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has clarified that there has been no increase in parking tax, but rather a revision aimed at uniformity and fairness. The new structure ensures a standard rate for all, replacing the previous area-wise taxation with a building-wise approach.

According to BBMP Commissioner, Tushar Girinath, the revised tax will not burden residential buildings, while commercial buildings are expected to benefit from the changes. Under the new system, parking tax for residential buildings will be charged at ₹2 per square foot, whereas non-residential buildings will be taxed at ₹3 per square foot.

BBMP has been collecting parking tax since 2016, but it was previously levied based on specific areas. The shift to a square-foot-based model ensures uniformity across all properties. Parking tax will now apply only to the land used for parking.

To implement these changes, BBMP has published a draft notification. Citizens with objections or suggestions can submit them by April 5. The move aims to streamline tax collection while ensuring fairness in application.

Commercial buildings stand to gain from the revised taxation system, while residential property owners will not face additional financial strain. The BBMP’s decision aligns with its broader efforts to simplify municipal tax structures and promote transparency in revenue collection.
