The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has sounded an alert after a noticeable spike in stray dog attacks across the city. As reports of aggressive behaviour rise, the civic body has initiated efforts to study the root causes and prepare a strategy to mitigate further incidents.

According to BBMP officials, two major reasons have emerged behind the increasing aggression of stray dogs. The first and most common trigger is hunger. Officials say the dogs are becoming more hostile due to irregular feeding times and food scarcity, leading them to lash out at pedestrians and local residents.
The second, more unexpected factor, is the arrival of unfamiliar people or new dogs into a particular area. Dogs tend to form territories and become comfortable with familiar humans and fellow strays. When someone new, be it a person or another dog, enters this territory, it often leads to defensive or aggressive behaviour from the pack.
BBMP has already begun providing food to strays in certain areas to ease the hunger-driven aggression. However, officials admit that dealing with cross-border movement of dogs and unfamiliar people will require more planning and possibly new guidelines.
