In a significant move to enhance pedestrian safety, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has introduced stringent guidelines concerning the installation of gates in residential areas. Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao issued directives mandating that all gates facing public footpaths must open inward, thereby preventing obstruction of pedestrian pathways.

During a recent inspection in Seetharampalya in Mahadevapura, Commissioner Rao observed several gates that opened outward, encroaching upon footpaths and posing safety hazards to pedestrians. In response, he instructed officials to enforce compliance with the new regulations and to impose fines on property owners who fail to adhere to the guidelines.

The BBMP has also called upon private entities, including apartment complexes and commercial establishments, to voluntarily take responsibility for the maintenance and development of footpaths adjacent to their properties. This initiative aims to ensure that pedestrian pathways are well-maintained and free from obstructions.

Furthermore, the BBMP has set specific standards for footpath widths: residential areas must maintain a minimum width of 1.8 meters, while commercial zones should have footpaths that are at least 2.5 meters wide.
