  • This would be directly proportional to electricity consumption
  • Apartments would have to bear a charge falling in the range of Rs 30 to Rs 500
  • Commercial outlets would also have to pay an amount between Rs 75 to Rs 1200

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to charge Rs 30 as a minimum fare from citizens for the collection of garbage. This proposal is yet to gain approval from the state government.

As per the rate sheet, apartments would have to bear a charge falling in the range of Rs 30 to Rs 500. This would be directly proportional to electricity consumption. Commercial outlets would also have to pay an amount in this regard. For this the range is determined to be Rs 75 to Rs 1200. The BBMP expects the collection from this endeavour to hover around the range of Rs 70 crore to Rs 75 crore.

Were this plan to materialise, BBMP would be working alongside the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) to implement this system. This is due to the fact that BESCOM has a large set of meter readers at its disposal. BBMP might also be providing a service fee to BESCOM in this regard.

Earlier, this fee was collected alongside the property tax. However the cost recovered from that was deemed to be insufficient. This was resulting in delays in payment for the cleaning staff.

Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is speculated as  the person who would be taking a call on whether this system will see the light of the day.
