BBMP released an area wise breakdown of the number of street dogs in Bengaluru. They had conducted a three-week survey from 11th July to 2nd August for this purpose. The total number of street dogs in the city is 279,335. This is higher than the reported number before the area wise breakdown with reports suggesting that the 2.2 lakh street dogs are present across the city. But this is still a substantial decline from the number reported in the previous survey which was conducted in 2019. A 20% increase in the rate of neutering dogs has been reported in the press release from the Joint Secretary of the Animal Husbandry of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
East zone has a street dog population of 37,685. The West zone boasts of 22,025 street dogs. The South Zone consists of 23,241street dogs. The number of street dogs in the Dasarahalli regionamounts to 21,221. RR Nagar’s dog population has touched 41,266. The figures for street dogs in Bommanahalli are slated at 39,183. 36,343 dogs inhabit Yelahanka. Mahadevapura topped the list with 58,341 dogs.
The study concluded that the population control and management of street dogs has been successfully implemented by the BBMP.
