Following a trend set by other municipal bodies in the state, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has committed to swapping out nearly 3 lakh conventional streetlights with energy-efficient LED ones. This strategic move aims to slash electricity bills by over 50%, a significant boon for the city’s finances.
The ambitious project comes with a price tag of approximately Rs 669 crore, greenlit by administrative authorities a few weeks prior, with tender processes scheduled post Lok Sabha elections. Currently, the city expends roughly Rs 300 crore annually on streetlight electricity bills for its 5 lakh luminaries.

BBMP officials anticipate massive savings by transitioning to LED technology, boasting enhanced durability and energy efficiency. Moreover, the new LED lamps will incorporate a centralized control and monitoring system per zone, facilitating more effective maintenance.
In Mahadevapura zone, the first wave of LED installations has already begun, with plans to extend across the remaining seven zones. Out of the total 4.6 lakh streetlights in these zones, over 1.8 lakh LED lamps have already been deployed, with the remainder slated for completion within months post-tender.
This innovative approach is expected to redirect approximately Rs 95 crore annually from the electricity bill budget towards financing the project.
With safety and efficiency at the forefront, BBMP’s adoption of LED technology underscores a commitment to modernizing infrastructure while optimizing financial resources.
