The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has called off its planned late-night metro service on May 23, 2025, following the relocation of the Indian Premier League (IPL) match originally set to take place at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Royal Challengers Bengaluru versus Sunrisers Hyderabad fixture was shifted to Lucknow due to predictions of heavy rainfall in Bengaluru.
BMRCL had earlier announced extended metro operations on the Purple and Green lines until 1:30 a.m. to accommodate cricket fans and ease traffic congestion. This initiative was part of a broader effort to promote eco-friendly, mass-transit solutions during major public events. However, with the match moved out of the city, the need for additional services was eliminated.

Regular metro operations will continue as scheduled on May 23. The decision comes in the wake of an earlier weather-related disruption, where the RCB vs Kolkata Knight Riders match was washed out, stranding thousands in the absence of extended public transport options.
The cancellation reflects how Bengaluru’s infrastructure must swiftly adapt to weather uncertainties and shifting event schedules. While BMRCL’s prompt update prevented unnecessary operational costs, the situation underscores a growing need for flexible and climate-resilient urban planning.
As Bengaluru aims to strengthen its green mobility strategy, integrating real-time contingency planning into public transit frameworks will be essential for future large-scale events, particularly in an era of increasing climate volatility.
