  • Bengaluru to hit 10.2°C, below January’s 15.8°C average
  • Dense fog may disrupt early morning visibility
  • City faces coldest spell in a decade, driven by North India’s cold wave

Residents of Bengaluru are gearing up for an unusual cold spell, with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a sharp dip in temperatures. The minimum temperature in some parts of the city is forecast to drop to 10.2°C on Saturday, significantly lower than the city’s January average of 15.8°C.

This dramatic temperature drop is attributed to a cold wave sweeping across North India, which has influenced weather conditions in the southern tech hub. IMD has also issued warnings about dense fog that could affect visibility, particularly during early morning hours, advising commuters to exercise caution.

The predicted low would mark a stark deviation from recent records. Bengaluru’s coldest January temperature in recent years was 12°C on January 16, 2012, while December last month saw temperatures plunge to 12.2°C—the coldest December in 14 years. Historically, the city’s lowest recorded temperature was 7.8°C on January 13, 1884.

As temperatures are expected to decrease by an additional 2°C in interior Karnataka over the next two days, residents are being urged to prepare for heightened cold conditions. With severe cold and fog on the horizon, Bengaluru is poised to experience its coldest spell in over a decade, underscoring the ongoing impact of North India’s cold wave.
