With illegal slaughtering of meat becoming rampant in the city, BBMP has warned butchers to slaughter meat only at the designated slaughterhouses in the city, otherwise action would be taken against them.
Currently, there are only three official slaughterhouses in the city. Tannery Road, Pottery Road and K R Market are the areas where the three official slaughterhouses are located in Bengaluru.
Illegal slaughtering of meat is rampant across places in Bengaluru.
The slaughterhouse on Tannery Road is in a bad state and very poorly managed, so is also the case with other two slaughterhouses.
The slaughterhouses pose a serious health problem to people living in its vicinity who have raised concerns against them and have even called to ban these slaughterhouses in city limits and shifte them to places on the outskirts of the city.
Despite Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) making efforts to comply with court orders and Karnataka State Pollution Control Broad’s (KSPCB) strictures on managing slaughterhouses; illegal slaughtering of animals continues unabated in the city.
The pollution caused by the slaughterhouse and people’s hesitance to live in nearby places and buy properties in these areas have become a matter of great concern and litigation.
It’s been a couple of decades since when the authorities concerned had planned to move slaughterhouses to far away places, but there is no progress on this to date.
The 2002 Karnataka High Court order had directed authorities concerned to shift the slaughterhouses to places on the outskirts of the city as the slaughterhouses pose health risk to people living around them. But, even this order, over the years, failed to shift slaughterhouses to places outside city limits as BBMP could not find suitable land for the same.
The slaughterhouses even today continue to operate in the city with poorly maintained effluent treatment mechanisms that pose a great health risk.
