A City Armed Reserve (CAR) staff member and a recently retired colleague are under police investigation for allegedly misappropriating Rs 59 lakh in funds. The accused, DS Prashant, a second-division assistant, and Saroja B Bijapura, a retired assistant administrative officer, are suspected of financial misconduct spanning 2019 to 2024.

The alleged misappropriation came to light during an internal audit conducted in January this year. According to the complaint filed by Assistant Administrative Officer D Rajalakshmi, the audit revealed a shortfall of Rs 59 lakh. The investigation uncovered that the duo had worked in a section managing financial operations for CAR, including water bill expenses and salary recoveries. Instead of depositing funds into the appropriate bank accounts, they reportedly funneled the money into private accounts.

Prashant, who was recently transferred to another department, is accused of failing to hand over files and financial details to Saroja before his transfer. Saroja, who retired in May, reportedly did not follow up to ensure the transfer of these documents, contributing to the financial mismanagement.

The case has raised concerns about procedural lapses and accountability in managing public funds. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the alleged embezzlement to determine the full extent of the misconduct and identify any additional parties involved.
