The Karnataka government has announced the renaming of Bengaluru City University to Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University, paying tribute to the former Prime Minister of India, who passed away on February 26. The decision was unveiled by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his budget presentation in the Legislative Assembly on March 7, 2025.

As part of the initiative, the university is set to be developed into a model institution. Additionally, Government Arts College and Government RCC College will be merged as constituent colleges under the university, enhancing its academic infrastructure.

Siddaramaiah, delivering his 16th state budget, also set an ambitious revenue collection target of ₹40,000 crore for the financial year 2025-26. The renaming move aligns with the government’s broader vision of strengthening higher education and commemorating the contributions of Dr. Manmohan Singh, known for his role in India’s economic reforms and governance.

Bengaluru City University, a prominent institution in the state’s education landscape, is expected to benefit from this transformation, with plans for improved academic and research facilities. The government's decision underscores Karnataka’s commitment to educational excellence while paying homage to a leader who played a crucial role in shaping India's economic trajectory.

The renaming is expected to be formally implemented in the coming months, following necessary administrative approvals.
