CM Siddaramaiah writes to PM Modi seeking help for 15-month-old boy

CM requests PM to provide financial assistance from PM CARES Fund

Maurya is grappling with a rare Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) disease

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has appealed to Prime Minister Modi for assistance in the treatment of a 15-month-old boy afflicted with a rare ailment.

The Chief Minister has sought financial aid from the central government and requested an exemption from import duties on the necessary medication.

The infant, Maurya, is currently grappling with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), and the cost of the required medication is approximately Rs 17.5 crore.

Siddaramaiah has urged PM Modi to step in and provide financial assistance from the PM CARES Fund to facilitate the acquisition of the crucial injection.

In a formal letter addressed to PM Modi, CM Siddaramaiah highlighted the plight of young Maurya, a resident of Karnataka, who is bravely fighting the debilitating effects of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

“Our healthcare experts have informed us about a potential solution in the form of an injection called Zolgensma. The exorbitant cost of this medication is already staggering, and the additional burden of import tariffs further complicates the situation, rendering the acquisition of this life-saving treatment nearly unfeasible for the family,” Siddaramaiah conveyed.

The letter emphasized two crucial requests: firstly, to instruct the Ministry of Finance to waive off the import duties on Zolgensma necessary for the child’s treatment; and secondly, to consider allocating financial aid from the PM CARES Fund to facilitate the procurement of the vital injection.
