The deadline for commercial establishments and shops to adapt name boards that have 60% of the space allocated for Kannada alphabets was initially 29th February. However an extension has been requested pertaining to this. Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka DK Shivakumar has now notified that the deadline has been extended by a period of 2 weeks. “Considering that it takes time to change the signage, Karnataka Govt has decided to extend the deadline given to commercial establishments by 2 more weeks so that the 60% signage in Kannada rule can be followed. It is important that we uphold our mother tongue in utmost respect, therefore we expect this law will be duly followed, and we shall see compliance to it by the end of the 2 week extended period,” he said.

The Chief Commissioner of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Tushar Girinath has provided an update on this issue. “The deadline we provided has already arrived. Only 3000 stores out of 55,000 across the city are left behind presently. This is according to our survey. Our officials have spoken to store owners. We have given them 2 more weeks to change their name boards. If any establishment fails to follow the rules even after this time period, appropriate action will be initiated against them. They risk losing their licence and having their store seized. We will not be issuing any fresh notice,” he stated.
