Following the Karnataka Congress’s accusation of former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy engaging in electricity theft during the Deepavali festivities, Kumaraswamy has expressed ‘regret’ for the incident.

The JDS state president has conveyed his willingness to pay any fines imposed by the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM).

On November 14 (today), Karnataka Congress shared a video on X (formerly Twitter) showcasing Kumaraswamy’s residence in JP Nagar, Bengaluru, where an electricity wire was connected to the festive lighting. The Congress accused the ex-CM of electricity theft and urged him to avail of the ‘Gruha Jyothi’ scheme, which offers 200 units of free electricity.

In response to the allegations, HD Kumaraswamy acknowledged the charge on X but attributed the action to a private decorator. He explained that the decorator, tasked with adorning his house for Deepavali, had tested the lighting using a wire from an electricity pole.

Kumaraswamy, who was at Bidadi farmhouse at the time, stated that upon his return, he was made aware of the situation and promptly had the connection removed, opting to link it to the meter board instead. He expressed regret for the oversight and affirmed his readiness to accept any fines imposed by BESCOM.

In reaction to Kumaraswamy’s post, some netizens tagged BESCOM, urging the imposition of fines for electricity theft. It’s worth noting that just last week, Kumaraswamy had accused the Congress-led government of plunging Karnataka into ‘darkness’ due to load shedding.
