Bengaluru’s worsening traffic congestion has prompted the city’s traffic police to adopt artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic signals to streamline vehicular movement. As part of a ₹53 crore project, AI-powered signals have been installed at 125 junctions, with plans to expand to 165 locations.

These AI-driven signals operate round the clock and are designed to optimize traffic flow by adjusting signal durations based on real-time congestion levels. The technology, implemented by C-DoT, includes two systems: Adaptive Traffic Control (BATCAS) and Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC).

BATCAS detects traffic density at different intersections and adjusts signals accordingly, while VAC extends green signals for high-traffic routes and shortens them for less congested roads. Officials estimate that this system could reduce travel time by up to 33%, significantly easing congestion, particularly during peak hours.

By prioritizing heavily used routes, the AI signals aim to prevent unnecessary traffic jams and reduce waiting times at intersections. This initiative marks a significant step toward smart traffic management in Bengaluru, improving efficiency for daily commuters.
