Bengaluru: Devaraje Gowda granted bail by Karnataka High Court in relation to sexual assault case

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Leader-cum-Lawyer Devaraje Gowda who was earlier arrested has been granted bail by a single-judge bench in the Karnataka High Court. Senior lawyer Arun Shyam argued on his behalf in the case. 

A complaint of sexual assault was filed against him on April 1st. The alleged incident is said to have occurred on December 29th 2023. Devaraje Gowda had alleged that he was honeytrapped and filed a complaint on March 28th. The victim’s husband filed a complaint. The case however did not make much progress. Arun argued that a B-Report has been filed by the Police.

There was a gap of more than 90 days between when the incident supposedly occurred and the case was filed. Arun Shyam stated that the reason for accepting the video calls remains unclear at the moment. Justice M.G Uma listened to arguments from both sides before approving the petition for bail. 

Devaraje Gowda was summoned to the court in relation to the sexual assault case filed against him. A judicial custody lasting until 24th May was granted to the police. He was lodged in a prison in Hassan throughout the duration of his judicial custody. Devaraje Gowda had earlier alleged that the Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka D.K Shivakumar had a role in leaking the obscene videos of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna.
