Diwali, the festival of lights, turned dark for many in Bengaluru as a rise in firecracker-related injuries marked this year’s celebrations. City hospitals reported as many as 50 cases of injuries caused by firecrackers, with Minto Eye Hospital alone treating 29 individuals impacted by the festivities.

According to hospital data, 14 of the cases involved severe injuries, while 15 were categorized as minor. Among the injured, 17 are children and 12 are young adults, highlighting the increased vulnerability of younger celebrants to firecracker mishaps. Four patients required surgery to address the extent of their injuries.
Doctors pointed out that while firecrackers are central to Diwali festivities, reckless handling and disregard for safety precautions remain major contributors to these accidents. Commonly reported dangerous practices included lighting firecrackers while holding them, throwing them at others, and experimenting with unsafe firing methods.
Medical professionals emphasized the need for greater awareness and caution during Diwali, as many of these incidents could have been avoided with basic safety measures. The rise in injuries underscores an urgent call for more stringent supervision, particularly for young participants, and careful adherence to safety protocols while celebrating with fireworks.
