Bengaluru has been ranked the safest city in the country, according to a recent survey by the University of Hyderabad. The city's strong performance is attributed to a significant decrease in crime rates during the first three months of 2025, compared to the same period in previous years.

City police report a 12% drop in IPC-related cases and a 39% decline in cyber fraud cases, from 4,679 in 2024 to 2,838 in 2025. Dacoity cases fell by 71%, robbery by 73%, chain snatching by 57%, and night-time thefts by 41%.

One of the key reasons for this improvement is the Bengaluru Police's strategic use of surveillance technology. In the Whitefield subdivision alone, one lakh CCTV cameras have been geo-mapped, enabling the police to quickly access nearby footage following a crime. Over 1.2 lakh cameras across the city have been geo-linked in the past year.

Geo-mapping allows the police to access location and ownership details of public-installed cameras, significantly aiding crime detection. This system recently helped solve a house robbery under HAL police limits, where nearly 1 kg of gold was stolen. The gang was tracked and arrested in Varanasi with the help of CCTV evidence.

In stark contrast, Kolkata has now been labelled the most unsafe city in the country.
