An entrepreneur in Bengaluru has claimed that he is being asked to pay a bribe of Rs 1 lakh to secure a licence for establishing a manufacturing facility, raising concerns about corruption and the ease of doing business in India. Aman Sharma, the founder of Aroleap, a smart home-gym equipment company, shared his experience on Twitter on Wednesday. He tweeted, "Dark side of Make in India! Went and filed for the licence directly. Being asked for Rs 1 lakh as bribe to get the licence now!" Sharma expressed his frustration over systemic corruption.

In December 2024, Sharma had shared that he was in the process of obtaining a factory licence for his new manufacturing unit. He revealed that a vendor assisting him in the process mentioned "out-of-pocket expenses" amounting to around Rs 70,000, adding to his concerns about the ease of doing business under the "Make in India" initiative.

Sharma did not specify the department or location involved in the alleged bribery. His claims, however, have amplified criticism of corruption in Karnataka’s administration. Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital, recently slammed the Siddaramaiah-led government, calling it the "most corrupt government" Karnataka has seen. He accused both politicians and officials of normalizing bribes for everyday tasks, including property tax assessments and plan approvals.
