In a first in the country, an underground transformer facility was unveiled at Malleswaram in Bengaluru. Energy Minister KJ George unveiled underground transformer and said that this new move is aimed at enhancing the safety and reliability of power supply.
This new underground 500 kVA transformer facility is being jointly commissioned by Bescom and BBMP.
According to sources, the government is also planning to convert overhead high tension and low tension cables into underground cables.
This along with underground transformers will make power supply more efficient and safe.
This transformer helps to reduce threat to people unlike the traditional transformers that are put up on streets or on roadside.
Susceptibility to dangers around traditional transformers is huge as these are placed in public areas, making pedestrian movement unsafe around these places. With the new underground transformers, all these hassles and dangers will find an end.
Underground transformers also prevent accidents like electrocution and transformer blasts. These transformers will function more efficiently as compared to the traditional transformers. Underground transformers will be protected from scorching sun and adverse weather conditions, this adds to the efficient functioning of these transformers.
More such underground transformers will come up in Bescom jurisdiction. An underground transformer facility will cost around Rs 2 crore.
