Precautionary measures have been implemented to address burn injuries resulting from the use of firecrackers. The Mahabodhi Burns Ward at Victoria Hospital, affiliated with Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI), is equipped with a dedicated team of 24/7 doctors and staff for effective burns management.
Addressing eye injuries, Minto Eye Hospital has established a specialized firecracker injury ward, featuring 10 beds for males, 10 for females, and 15 for children in need of treatment. A continuous presence of specialist doctors ensures round-the-clock care for patients. Additionally, Narayana Nethralaya has initiated a 24/7 emergency unit from November 12-14 to cater specifically to eye-related injuries associated with Deepavali firecrackers.
Injuries range from mild irritations and corneal abrasions to more severe complications such as corneal damage and open globe injuries that can potentially result in blindness.
Chemical injuries may occur due to the substances present in firework gunpowder, while smoke can cause eye irritation and fumes may lead to throat infections. Sparklers, in particular, pose a significant danger, reaching temperatures high enough to melt gold and causing severe burns.
It is crucial to take precautions to avoid these injuries, given the unpredictable nature of firework explosions, even with careful handling or supervision.
Furthermore, the surge in nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide levels during Deepavali contributes to elevated pollution levels, emphasizing the importance of safety measures during the festival.
