Overcrowding linked to infrequent trains and shortage of new coaches

Namma Metro’s Purple Line has been operational for only a week now linking the city’s eastern and western sectors.

While this development has brought respite to commuters, but significant overcrowding has resulted in prolonged queues and inconvenience for passengers.

The Nadaprabhu Kempegowda interchange station-Majestic, Indiranagar, Baiyappanahalli, and M.G. Road metro stations along the Purple Line are grappling with overcrowding commuters.

The overcrowding predicament is being linked to the infrequent train schedule along this route and the shortage of coaches due to delayed supply from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC).

As per media reports highlighting BMRCL officials as saying that the delay arose from CRRC’s inability to meet the criteria of producing 75% of the coaches within India, as mandated by the Make in India initiative. CRRC encountered setbacks due to its failure to establish a manufacturing facility in India. To address the issue, the Chinese company has now collaborated with Kolkata-based Titagarh Wagons to fulfill the remaining coach orders.

Media reports further suggested BMRCL as saying that the frequency of trains will be adjusted in accordance with the demand, and effective strategies for managing the crowds will be implemented at the stations.
