Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has introduced a sensory room for neurodivergent passengers and those with sensory sensitivities. It has become the first airport in India to do so.

The sensory room is located near the 080 International Lounge on Level 4 of Terminal 2. According to the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL),  this room is introduced  to provide a calming space for those passengers who find airports overwhelming due to bright lights, announcements and crowded environments.

The authority has also stated that this room is designed to support those with psychological conditions such as Autism-Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), anxiety disorders and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). 

The release also said that the sensory room was developed in collaboration with Incluzza, an organisation specializing in disability inclusion. The sensory room embodies various elements such as ambient lighting, interactive wall and floor projections, a ball pool and a sensory toy station. 

There are more additional elements like a bubble tube, a galaxy projector, LED Cubes, weighted blankets, crash pads and therapy mats designed to support emotional regulation and relaxation. The sensory room also includes auditory elements such as a white noise machine, tactile panels, an infinity mirror, and an aroma diffuser serving various sensory needs. 

The release also said that embodying this feature will align with airport’s efforts to enhance accessibility and inclusivity.

A person who is neuro divergent is someone whose brain processes information in a different way compared to a normal person.
