The Karnataka High Court has taken note of a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the continued toll collection at the Nagasandra toll plaza in Bengaluru, despite the alleged expiration of its contractual term. On Tuesday, a division bench led by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C M Joshi issued formal notices to the Union of India and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in response to the PIL filed by advocate A V Amarnathan.

According to the petitioner, the toll operations at the Nagasandra plaza have continued unlawfully even after the expiry of the toll contract in 2021. The PIL alleges that toll fees are still being charged via FASTag from all vehicles using the road, a critical route connecting nearly 20 districts in Karnataka.
The plea also argues that the toll plaza lies within the limits of Bengaluru city, just five kilometers from Yeshwanthpur, and that toll collection within city limits is not legally permitted under prevailing rules.
In addition to demanding an immediate halt to toll collection, the petitioner has requested the court to direct authorities to produce a full record of toll revenue collected at Nagasandra from 2021 to date. The matter is set to come up for the next hearing on September 17.
