The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in Bengaluru has extended an invitation to the residents to sign up as ‘Kere Mitra’ (lake friend) and ‘Hasiru Mitra’ (green friend) for the purpose of aiding in the upkeep of parks and lakes.

Volunteers are tasked with various responsibilities, including but not limited to maintaining cleanliness, removing weeds, and overseeing ongoing developmental projects.

Additionally, they have the opportunity to mobilize funds from corporate social responsibility initiatives to enhance the condition of these areas.

BBMP officials are optimistic that this initiative for citizen engagement will significantly contribute to the effective maintenance of parks and lakes.

Interested individuals can register as volunteers through the civic agency’s official website. The office of the special commissioner (lakes/horticulture) at BBMP released a notification regarding this on October 19.

It is expected that the volunteers will actively monitor the progress of projects in the parks and lakes on a daily basis, enabling more effective management of these spaces.

The concerned officials will verify the applications before assigning the responsibility of maintaining lakes or parks to individuals.

According to BBMP officials, Kere Mitras will oversee activities such as sweeping pathways, cleaning bund slopes, removing weeds, maintaining inlets and outlets, clearing wetlands, managing vegetation, monitoring attendance, ensuring adherence to designated lake hours, and verifying the punctuality of the assigned officials.

In parks, Hasiru Mitras will be responsible for daily tasks such as sweeping, pruning hedges, shrubs, and other plants, watering, mowing lawns, maintaining borewells, enforcing opening and closing times as per regulations, managing waste disposal, and overseeing electrical maintenance.
