Bengaluru: KSTDC taxi drivers halt services at KIA, demand action against illegal operators

Taxi drivers affiliated with the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) staged a two-day protest at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Tuesday and Wednesday, halting services to demand a crackdown on unauthorised taxi operators allegedly operating illegally on the airport premises.

The protest stemmed from growing concerns among KSTDC drivers about private taxi operators allegedly impersonating official airport taxis to pick up passengers from designated KSTDC zones. Drivers claim these operators often bypass airport rules, directly solicit passengers, and overcharge them—tarnishing the reputation of legitimate services. They also accused the authorities of inaction despite repeated incidents and growing tensions on the ground.

KSTDC, which operates over 1,400 taxis at the airport under an agreement with BIAL, requires drivers to follow strict protocols including digital meters, ticket issuance, uniforms, and regulated queuing. However, drivers allege that unauthorised taxis disregard these rules, leading to unfair competition and financial losses.

The protest, which continued late into Wednesday, prompted KSTDC’s transport division to submit a formal complaint to the KIA police. The letter outlined the operational challenges faced by official drivers due to unregulated pickups and urged urgent intervention to restore order.

Despite assurances from KSTDC management, the drivers did not resume operations, demanding immediate and strict enforcement measures to curb the alleged violations and protect their livelihood.
