Bengaluru has inaugurated its first Automated Testing Station (ATS) in Nelamangala, marking a significant shift in vehicle fitness checks. The initiative, spearheaded by the Transport Department, replaces traditional manual inspections with a modern automated system, promising enhanced efficiency, transparency, and accountability.

“Automation eliminates human errors and subjectivity, ensuring accurate and impartial results,” an official from the department reportedly stated. Vehicles at the ATS undergo rigorous automated testing, with certificates issued directly based on the results. This streamlined process is expected to reduce corruption and curb the involvement of middlemen in the fitness certification (FC) process.

The station employs advanced machinery to perform visual and technical checks, recording every detail. Results are withheld until the final report is compiled, ensuring fairness. Additionally, the system undergoes biannual audits to maintain compliance standards.

Fitness certificate validity varies by vehicle type. Private vehicles require renewal every five years after the initial 15-year validity, while commercial vehicles need annual renewal after eight years.

Expansion Plans Across Karnataka

The Transport Department aims to establish ATS facilities in 13 more locations, including Devanahalli, Tumakuru, and Shivamogga, under a design-build-operate-transfer model. Separately, automated testing centres will be set up in 19 locations, such as East Bengaluru, Ramanagara, and Udupi, using a build-own-operate model.

This rollout represents a significant milestone in improving road safety and vehicle compliance across Karnataka.
