Bengaluru has introduced a key update to its Adaptive Traffic Control System (ATCS), aiming to improve road efficiency through real-time data-driven signal management. In a post on social media platform X, the city’s traffic police unveiled the upgrade, which now displays countdown timers before green signals, even in vehicle-actuated or manually operated modes. Officials claim the feature helps drivers anticipate movement, enabling smoother and more organized traffic flow.

This advancement comes amid growing frustration over traffic mismanagement in the city. Many residents have taken to social media to voice concerns about erratic signal patterns and extended delays at junctions. The new Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), IPS officer Karthik Reddy, assumed office recently and is expected to focus heavily on urban mobility reforms.

However, criticism has already surfaced. Former Bengaluru Police Commissioner and BJP leader Bhaskar Rao called the AI-backed traffic signal system “counterproductive,” arguing that it increases wait times and often needs manual overrides, defeating its purpose.
With Bengaluru’s long-standing traffic woes worsened by incomplete infrastructure and the recent ban on bike taxis, the effectiveness of the upgraded system remains under close public and political scrutiny.
