Diwali is a festival that brings loved ones together, but for some, being away from family can make it a lonely occasion. This was the experience of Surbhi Jain, founder of the Neend App and an IIT Bombay alumna, who spent a solitary Diwali in Bengaluru five years ago—a memory she recently shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Jain recounted that her friends, roommates, and colleagues had all left the city to celebrate with family, leaving her alone in her apartment. “Five years ago, I was in Bangalore for Diwali, and it was a truly sad and lonely day,” she shared, reflecting on the isolation she felt while everyone else was surrounded by loved ones.

However, her Diwali took a touching turn thanks to a small gesture from a delivery agent named Ramesh. That evening, when Ramesh arrived with her food, he greeted her warmly and wished her a “Happy Diwali.” This simple, heartfelt interaction lifted Jain’s spirits. “Home alone in a big society, the only person who wished me ‘Happy Diwali’ in person was Ramesh, the delivery guy who brought food along with a warm smile,” she added.
Jain encouraged others to show kindness to those who cross their paths, particularly those like delivery agents who bring comfort in subtle yet meaningful ways.
