As per reports, the group had wagered that if Shabarish sat on the firecracker box while they ignited it, they would reward him with an autorickshaw. CCTV footage of the event, which has surfaced on social media, captures Shabarish seated on the box as one friend lit the firecrackers and then quickly moved away. The explosive power of the firecrackers caused thick smoke to fill the area as Shabarish collapsed on the road. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on November 2.
Authorities have registered a case of culpable homicide against the six individuals involved. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Bengaluru) Lokesh Jagalasar confirmed that the friends were taken into custody and presented in court. The police have launched a full investigation into the incident.
