In a recent incident highlighting the challenges faced by ride-hailing app users, a Bengaluru man thwarted a Rapido cab driver’s alleged attempt to overcharge him.

Sharing his experience on Reddit, the 25-year-old recounted how he outmaneuvered the driver’s scam with a clever mix of patience and empathy.

The man had booked a Rapido ride from Central College to Hoodi, with the app displaying a fare of ₹385. Despite noticing the driver’s low rating of 2.6 stars, he proceeded with the booking due to heavy rain and the driver’s proximity. Upon reaching his destination, the driver demanded ₹600 — nearly double the app’s quoted fare.

Realizing the scam, the commuter observed that his app still showed the trip as ongoing, with no deviations to justify the inflated fare. The driver, in an attempt to erase evidence, logged out of his account and into another, claiming technical issues and displaying an empty ride history.

Instead of direct confrontation, the passenger feigned sympathy, blaming a “server issue” for the confusion and promising to pay the balance after the app updated. After waiting 20 minutes and sensing his plan had failed, the driver reluctantly accepted the original ₹385 fare and left.

Rapido has yet to issue an official statement on the incident, which has sparked discussions about passenger safety and accountability in ride-hailing services.
