Earlier in January, the Bengaluru traffic police had announced that covering number plates itself attracts a fine of Rs 500 if it is a first time offence and Rs 1000 in case of repeated offence. “These are just the cases where the number plates have been hidden or altered deliberately. For example, some people are putting masks on their number plate or covering one of the numbers in order to hide from the traffic cameras installed on the roads. If you consider the defective cases as well, there are many more. People in the city do it to avoid fines. For example, many motorists do not wear a helmet and hide their vehicle numbers with masks or paint to avoid getting caught. Other times, the defective numbers are also out of ignorance, for example, they do not know the standard guidelines for the number plates on vehicles,” The DCP had mentioned.
