In a recent ruling, a Bengaluru consumer court has imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on a matrimony portal, Dilmil Matrimony, for failing to provide matchmaking services to a customer. The order was issued following a complaint from Vijaya Kumar K S, a resident of M S Nagar, who approached the platform to find a bride for his son, Balaji.

Kumar reportedly paid a Rs 30,000 fee to Dilmil Matrimony in March, with the company promising to find a match within 45 days. However, despite repeated follow-ups and multiple visits to the portal’s office, Kumar did not receive a single prospective match. After a final visit on April 30, when the staff allegedly refused his refund request and verbally abused him, Kumar issued a legal notice on May 9, which went unanswered by the portal.

After hearing the case, the court ruled in Kumar’s favor on October 28, citing Dilmil Matrimony’s “clear deficiency” in service and labeling the company’s actions as “unfair trade practices.” The court ordered a full refund of Rs 30,000, along with Rs 20,000 for service deficiencies, Rs 5,000 for mental anguish, and Rs 5,000 for litigation costs, totaling Rs 60,000 in penalties.
