Bengaluru metro boosts security with AI surveillance and ANPR technology

In a significant step toward enhancing commuter safety and station security, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has introduced an upgraded surveillance system at six metro stations between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road. Launched on Thursday, the system includes cutting-edge AI-powered video analytics and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. Unlike older systems that mainly monitored the inside of stations, the new setup extends coverage to surrounding areas as well, offering a broader security perimeter.

BMRCL Managing Director M Maheshwar Rao stated that this advanced system improves real-time threat detection and overall situational awareness for metro staff. With AI and ANPR integration, metro authorities can now quickly identify unusual behavior or potential threats and respond more effectively.

The ANPR component specifically tracks and analyzes vehicle number plates near metro premises, enhancing perimeter surveillance. According to officials, this system will also support better crowd control and strengthen coordination with law enforcement, especially during emergencies or heightened security situations.

Currently being piloted at six stations, the surveillance upgrade is expected to be expanded throughout the metro network in the future.

Separately, Bengaluru has geo-tagged over 5.35 lakh CCTV cameras as part of its Mobile Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (MCCTNS). Over three lakh of these were installed since January 2024, marking a leap in the city’s digital policing efforts.
