Bengaluru's Namma Metro stations are set to introduce a range of retail outlets, adding convenience and variety for commuters while increasing revenue for the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). According to reports, BMRCL is inviting tenders to open shops and cafes at 55 metro stations along the Purple and Green Lines, transforming station spaces into shopping and dining spots for daily travelers.

This initiative, according to BMRCL, aims to enhance the metro experience by offering commuters quick access to essentials. Retail spaces will host a mix of food kiosks, convenience stores, and personal care shops, catering to the immediate needs of passengers and adding a level of comfort to their daily commute. Reportedly, a BMRCL official highlighted that only family-friendly businesses would be permitted, with strict bans on alcohol, tobacco, gambling products, and LPG and kerosene usage to ensure safety.
BMRCL has identified 220 vacant spaces across these stations, each varying in size and rental cost. With detailed layouts and pricing available in the tender documents, the corporation encourages local businesses to participate.
Already established metro stations, including M.G. Road and Indiranagar, saw a decline in foot traffic and revenue during the pandemic. However, as daily ridership returns to pre-COVID levels, BMRCL anticipates renewed interest from businesses, hopeful for a boost in non-fare revenue.
