Bengaluru’s Metro is set to enhance the city’s mobile network with the installation of 5G infrastructure along key transit routes. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced plans to lease Metro pillar spaces for installing 5G small cells, targeting improved connectivity on the East-West Line, North-South Line of Phase-1, and Reaches 5 and 6.
BMRCL has invited e-tenders from qualified firms for the project, which offers designated spaces on elevated Metro pillars for telecom equipment. This initiative is expected to provide seamless 5G coverage along Metro corridors and nearby areas.

The move follows BMRCL’s pioneering efforts in 2022, when it partnered with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and Reliance Jio to test 5G under a pilot project at MG Road Metro station. These trials, using outdoor small cells (ODSC), demonstrated impressive speeds of 1.45 Gbps for downloads and 65 Mbps for uploads—50 times faster than 4G.
BMRCL officials emphasized the project’s dual purpose: strengthening Bengaluru’s technological ecosystem and generating additional revenue by leasing Metro infrastructure. Interested telecom operators can bid for pillars that align with their network needs, with tenders due by January 29, 2025.
Once operational, the enhanced connectivity will enable passengers to enjoy uninterrupted internet access, supporting work, entertainment, and other online activities during their commute.
The bids will be opened on January 30, 2025, marking a significant step toward a more connected Bengaluru.
