The modus operandi
The accused had stolen Rs 2000 from Prabuddha’s purse, which she had raised objection to. She had even threatened him that she would call the police. Out of sheer fear, he fell at her feet and begged forgiveness. And during this act, she fell and lost consciousness. At this crucial juncture, the accused used her previous instances of suicide attempts to portray it as a successful attempt.
Once she fell, he dragged her into the washroom, slit her wrists and killed her. Later, he used the floor mat to erase the blood stains and escaped from the hind door. It was only when the police intensified the investigations that they came to know about the botched murder.
Why did the accused need Rs 2000?
The accused had broken the spectacles of one of his friends. So he had to arrange the money to get it repaired. As he used to frequent the victim’s house, he knew that Prabuddha would have it and stole it.
