Bengaluru: Naked pictures of schoolgirls, created using deepfake go viral; jeopardise victims

    Deepfake videos of 9th std girls send panic

    Innocent girls had created an Insta group

    It is suspected that the accused could be someone known

In a shocking incident that can jeopardise the futures of several girls, an unknown person has morphed their pictures and released them on social media.

As many as 50 students of a college in Bengaluru had made an Instagram account. Using the photos posted here and deepfake, the accused released their naked photos. The victims do not know the credentials of the accused, but suspect that he might be known to them as he is in the instagram group. 

Once the issue came to light, the parents of these girls lodged a complaint with the cyber police. It is needless to say that the girls are traumatised. 

The scourge of deepfake

With advancement in technology, so are its perils. Deepfake is a technology that is used to alter or manipulate to misrepresent someone. This can corrupt their image and hit their dignity. 

In this instance, all the girls are in class 9 and the sleight of hand came to light on May 24. 

Earlier, deepfake videos of actress Rashmika Mandanna were released on social media. Not just her, even PM Narendra Modi had come in the firing line when his photo was manipulated using deepfake. 

It is indeed a serious cause of concern.
