With Diwali around the corner, a unique dilemma has struck the techies of Bengaluru. This is pertaining to whether Diwali bonuses should be given to the domestic workers in their houses and what amount for the same would be fair. A person shared a conversation pertaining to this from his apartment’s Whatsapp group. “Wife received this in the Apartment community group. How effing petty people are. We live in a community where the apartments go for 2 plus crores. And these people do not want to give a small amount for Diwali to the maids.,” he had captioned the post.
A person expressed his opinions regarding how others must exercise caution while handing out the amount. “Ladies please be cautious while giving Diwali bonuses to maids. Use your discretion according to their salary but not half month salary. If they helped you clean the entire house, its fine otherwise this is not acceptable. No job in the world would pay us half months salary as bonus forget about yearly increment they expect. Then why for them (sic),” the person said as per the screenshot.
Some were annoyed at the person’s tone and attitude. “Sad. We and lots of folks we know, pay a month's salary for Diwali. There is no insurance/ pension for our househelp. They are the reason we are able to do well at work,” a person stated in response to the post. Others however defended the person concerned. “Friend this must not be made public. This is ladies' jurisdiction and best not to judge them based on their call to give or not give. I respect your noble intentions though but ladies tend to have their own economics and math behind it.Trust them to make their best judgement (sic),” another X user opined.
