The Bengaluru Police arrested a doctor and his lab technician on November 27 for allegedly conducting approximately 900 unauthorized abortions over the past three years.

Dr. Chandan Ballal and lab technician Nisar were taken into custody last week, accused of charging around Rs 30,000 for each abortion at a hospital in Mysuru.

Earlier this month, the manager of the hospital, Meena, and the receptionist, Rizma Khan, were also arrested in connection with the illegal activities.

In a separate case last month, the police disrupted a sex-determination and female foeticide racket by apprehending Shivalinge Gowda and Nayan Kumar in Mandya, near Mysuru. The arrest occurred while they were transporting a pregnant woman for an abortion in a car.

During interrogation, the suspects revealed the existence of a jaggery unit in Mandya, which served as an ultrasound scan center. A police team subsequently seized the scan machine from the location, as it lacked valid authorization and official documents.

A preliminary inquiry has disclosed that over the past three years, the accused doctor and his associates managed to perform approximately 900 illegal abortions at the Mysuru Hospital, charging around Rs 30,000 for each procedure. Ongoing investigations aim to apprehend other individuals associated with the racket.
