The recent morphed videos of actresses Rashmika Mandanna and Kajol have amplified the concerns associated with the deepfake technology. The Bengaluru police have taken a proactive approach in tackling the misuse of the deepfake technology. “Don’t hesitate, act fast! If you or someone you know is a victim of deepfake, reach out to Bengaluru city police at 1930. We’re here to safeguard you against digital deception,” the Bengaluru City Police stated on a post in its X (formerly known as Twitter) handle. They specified that the helpline can be contacted not just by victims but also by those acquainted with a victim as well. This helpline serves the purpose of registering a case.

There is a widespread recognition of the deepfake menace and efforts are underway to curb its spread. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav cautioned social media platforms that for the safe harbour immunity clause to be applicable to them, they would have to ensure that stern action is taken against videos created by employing the deepfake technology. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke about this in one of his speeches. “A big section of our country has no parallel option for verification. People often end up believing in deepfakes. We need to educate people with our programmes about Artificial Intelligence and deepfakes, how it works, what it can do, what all challenges it can bring and whatever can be made out of it,” he said.
