In observance of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, the Bengaluru City Police have launched a week-long crackdown on illegal tobacco sales, starting May 27 and running through June 2. The campaign aims to enforce the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA), and curb the sale of tobacco products without valid licenses.

The initiative targets multiple violations, including public smoking, sale of tobacco to minors, and sales near educational institutions. Retailers operating without authorization from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will be penalized. Officials have warned that strict action will be taken against non-compliant shops.

A key focus will be the elimination of banned Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems, such as e-cigarettes and vape pens. Surprise inspections are planned at malls, cafés, and local stores, while ongoing efforts to shut down unauthorised hookah bars will intensify.

Despite the state government’s blanket ban on serving hookah in public spaces, several establishments were previously caught violating the order. Authorities now plan to step up enforcement to eliminate such practices entirely.

In collaboration with the BBMP, the police will also conduct awareness drives in commercial zones. These sessions will educate shopkeepers about legal guidelines for tobacco sales and guide them on obtaining proper licensing.

The campaign underscores the city’s commitment to promoting public health and ensuring compliance with tobacco control laws.
