In observance of World No Tobacco Day, Bengaluru Police have undertaken a special city-wide campaign to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and strictly enforce tobacco control laws. From May 31 to June 2, police personnel actively engaged with students and the public in various public places, educating them about the dangers of tobacco and the legal provisions under the amended COPTA Act, 2023.

The campaign highlighted key provisions such as the ban on smoking cigarettes in public places, with violations attracting a fine of Rs 1,000. Establishment of hookah bars in restaurants and pubs is prohibited. Advertising or promotion of tobacco products is also banned, with offenders facing up to 5 years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. Additionally, the sale of loose cigarettes or bidi is strictly forbidden.
During this period, the police registered 11,324 cases related to tobacco violations and collected fines totaling Rs 20,91,675. The proactive drive aims to reduce tobacco use and promote a healthier environment in the city by sensitizing citizens to the dangers of tobacco and reinforcing compliance with laws.
