In a push to bolster public safety, Bengaluru police have mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in establishments with high foot traffic under the Karnataka Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Act. The initiative seeks to improve crime prevention and response times by integrating surveillance cameras into the police network for real-time monitoring.

As part of the program, authorities have mapped the city to identify areas lacking adequate surveillance and issued over 10,000 notices to establishments. Businesses with a monthly footfall of 500 or more are required to install CCTV cameras that meet stringent technical standards, including Full HD resolution, night vision, and a 30-day storage capacity. The cameras must also cover a minimum of 50 meters of the surrounding area.
High-traffic establishments, such as malls, have been further advised to enhance security with additional measures, including Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMDs) and Hand-Held Metal Detectors (HHMDs), to address potential threats like bomb scares. The responsibility for installation and upkeep of the systems lies with business owners.
While the directive is mandatory for establishments meeting specific criteria, those that fall outside the scope of the Act are exempt. The move underscores Bengaluru’s commitment to fostering a safer urban environment for residents and visitors alike.
